Survey: What do you want from Belmont’s next superintendent?

Hey Blogging Belmont. Consider this a week o’ surveys. As you know, I published a call out for your input on starting a new, local news outlet. Now there’s another (important) survey seeking feedback from our community – this time on the criteria we should use in selecting our next school superintendent.

The Belmont Superintendent Screening Committee published an online survey to help identify screening criteria that will inform the selection of our next school superintendent. (Our current Super, John Phelan, has told the town that he will step down at the end of this year.) A link to the survey is below.

What is the role of the superintendent? According to Massachusetts’ Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), “the superintendent serves as the school committee’s chief executive officer and educational advisor. The superintendent is the educational leader for the school system, and provides administrative leadership for all school staff in operational matters and in proposing and implementing policy changes. Day-to-day operation of the school system is the responsibility of the superintendent, together with school principals and other administrative staff members.” (Source: Massachusetts “

With that in mind, complete the committee survey. The deadline to submit your response is Friday, February 10, 2023.
