Blogging Belmont sent questionnaires to the five candidates for those two positions with a number of questions that we felt were important for voters to understand candidates’ positions on before they vote. At the end of the day: putting the question to voters costs the Town of Belmont nothing. Not giving the voters a choice to throw a lifeline to the Town, on the other hand, has very high costs associated with it.
“I’m writing to express my deepest reservations about the status of our town’s budget cutting exercise and its impact on the School Department budget for FY 2021, ” School Committee member Michael Crowley begins his letter to the Select Board.
With per pupil spending in Belmont already about $3,000 per student/per year below the State average per district ($12,700 in Belmont vs. $15,900 avg.), our public schools entered the pandemic stretched to the breaking point. Now we risk plunging into a full-blown fiscal crisis with layoffs of instructional staff, increased class sizes and cuts to supplies.
Tuesday, April 2nd is the Town’s annual election. I share my choices for the (contested) town-wide races: Board of Selectmen, Housing Authority and School Committee. Remember to get out and vote!!
The Selectmen will have a tough vote on the Community Path again Monday evening. Once again Community Path supporters need to turn out in force to the Selectmen’s Hearing Room at Belmont Town Hall on Monday to voice support for a safe, off road route connecting Belmont to the Minuteman Path and Alewife MBTA station.
